More Problems Installing Drupal Local Machine Install
After completely wasting hours of time over the course of days, I'm feeling like I need to find the book "Drupal for Complete Idiots".
OK... my experience...
As per page 42 of the book... installed the WAMP stack. No problems. Next... per bottom of page.. need to install Drupal... but 1. mentions ONLY XAMPP or MAMP.. not WAMP... I figured it was an oversight not mentioning WAMP and I should still open the phpMyadmin. (IS THERE A MISSING THREAD HERE in the install explanation for WAMP?!!) After searching manually and with browser through all my files... could only find a phpmyadmin.conf - which windows couldn't open. Got online and more hours wasted researching and downloading programs that presumably recognized and could open that file. NO LUCK.
OK... this is going nowhere... perhaps XAMPP is the way to go. .. Uninstalled all my WAMP files, and went about attempting to install a XAMPP stack. Ran into problems, on my own... so went to the Drupal site link mentioned in this forum. Appeared to be a great line by line how to... (why isn't this in the book!?) so I uninstalled the XAMPP stack, and reinstalled XAMPPLITE as recommended.....First part went fine, installed WinZip... etc. however... once I got to line 0) 'TRICKY PART: click EXTRACT.... there is NO EXTRACT button to click)... OK... he must mean 3 spaces to the 'left' from Open... and "1 Click Unzip" button. Did that, and muddled my way as far as T)... "you should see two folders there Xampp and Drupal 1.16" ... but only have the XAMPP folder.
Repeat steps A- T.... beat my head against wall....over and over to figure out what I did wrong. (Hopefully it was not to buy this book!)ALL TOTAL - ABOUT 5 HOURS COMPLETELY WASTED!
LYNN.... WOULD IT BE A GOOD IDEA IF WRITING AN ENTIRE BOOK ON DRUPAL, THAT THE BOOK ACTUALLY GIVES READERS THE REMOTE POSSIBILITY OF ACTUALLY INSTALLING THE PROGRAM AND GETTING BEYOND PAGE 43?!!!!! While I appreciate your great depth of knowledge, the difficult part of writting such a book is to step out of your knowledge base, and into the mind of a "DUMMY", such as myself, without making me feel like an idiot wasting his time. YOUR immediate help with clear, concise, line by line instructions for getting DRUPAL installed WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, by myself, and I'm sure all the other readers you are trying to help. Thanks sincerely.

I had good luck with the two videos at the lullabot site:
http://www.lullabot.com/videos/install-local-web-server-windows-xp
and
http://www.lullabot.com/videos/install-local-web-server-mac-osx
I installed 6 on mac and then 7 alpha under virtuall in windows. They are similar on both platforms but differ in the details. You first name the database and create username and password, then read/write rights to the config files. Mac involves the .htaccess file and windows involves configuring via the little wamp menu. But both should work fine for you.
I agree that an intro book needs to go through both platforms and expose every little detail via either a video or tons of screen shots. Progressively less detail is needed as you get further along and you can gradually assume the reader has more experience.
