Lynn -
I really struggled (as most beginners do) with getting Drupal up and running on my home computer. But I figured it out and wrote a "how I did it" for the drupal.org site here:

Drupal for Dummies
installing drupal
Hi, I'm with justhost and did as you suggested in drupalfordummies... I tested drupal thru fantastico to get a sense of it and then followed the steps to download it via your instructions. I'm at page 38 and have a concern. I've currently got a site up and running thru JustHost via their very, very basic sitecreator which comes with the hosting, and I'm semi happy with it until I create a new one with drupal. If I continue on from page 38, will I lose the site I've got, or can I happily work on a drupal site in the background and upload when it's readu? Thanks for creating a book which makes it really easy to create a website from scratch, I'm so proud of myself... and I've hardly done anything!

You should be able to build a Drupal site in the background by installing Drupal in a directory under your main site. I don't know if your particular hosting company allows that or not, it's really a question for them. But typically you can have www.mymainwebsitehere.com and underneath that www.mymainwebsitehere.com/drupal.
thanks
thanks, am asking them now.... and looking into ubercart.

Sorry I took so long to respond, somehow I missed this posting. This is wonderful! I'll post a link in the blog on this site. Thank you!
No worries.
not a problem about the length of time it took, as you can see, I've just made it back to the find the answer... now looking for a setting that notifies me when a message comes thru.
