Error Message about SQL Database when installing Drupal

I purchased the for Dummies book and have been following it (having several issues - Network Solutions doesn't make it easy!) and am to the point where I'm installing Drupal and the Database Configuration page is giving me the following error:

"Failed to connect to your MySQL database server. MySQL reports the following message: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2).
Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct database hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?"

I have created the SQL database through the Network Solutions Database Manager (had to call it "drupalcr", as Network Solutions won't let you create just "drupal") and double and triple checked to make sure I was putting in the right information when trying to install drupal.

Keep in mind that I'm not a programmer outside of HTML and I don't know a lot of complex coding... so in layman's terms: what am I missing here?

Hi lalalanono,

Hi lalalanono,

I also am setting up a site hosted at Network Solutions and you do need to modify your settings.php file to get your database access working. Specifically, configure this line:

$db_url = 'mysqli://username:password@localhost/databasename';

You already know your username and password and you indicated your databasename is: "drupalcr".

The term "localhost" in the code example above needs to be replaced with the Network Solutions Database Server Name. If you login to your Account Manager and navigate back to the Database Manager, where you created the database, you should be able to see the server name listed in a group with username and a concealed password. In my case, the server looks like this, "XXXXXXX" (seven characters).

You will also want to configure this line:

$base_url = 'http://www.example.com/drupal'; // NO trailing slash!

If you are not installed in a subfolder, simply insert your URL and delete the rest. If a subfolder, correct it to match that name as well.

Another word of advice with Network Solutions, is that any custom php settings need to be made in a php.ini file installed in your cgi-bin folder (outside of the htdocs folder). Any php instructions in your .htaccess file within your root drupal folder will likely interfere with your site. Delete or comment out these statements in .htaccess and move them to your php.ini file.

I would also enable the error logs in your Account Manager ASAP and get them working. It took me several contacts to their Tech Support and several days of downtime before the logs were working properly. Network Solutions seems to pride itself on a 72 hour response time. Not exactly stellar in my book.

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.s

Hi,
I had the same (similar?) issue. The issue was resolved after I copied the default.settings.php file to settings.php and then subsequently modified the settings.php file as noted in the instructions. For me, anyway, the default.settings.php file was needed in ADDITION to the modified settings.php file. Also, another "gotcha" is that depending on how you do the copy of the default.settings.php file you "may" end up with a file named "settings.php.php" and I can testify that that doesn't work either. Windows does not make it easy to determine if this is the case either!!

Jerry
