My site is http://gardenobserver.com. I'm not a designer. Do you have any tips for improving the look of the site?

and have you thought about putting the ads at the bottom of the page? I'm not into advertising at all and get annoyed when they're forced on me with sites.
First, you're on the right track
The first thing I appreciate about your site as it stands is how simple and uncluttered it is. Less is more, and you've started off well.
From a user perspective, you may want to rethink the order of the navigation links across the top, and what makes sense to go there versus the nav links on the right. You might consider alphabetizing your topic list and moving it to the right. I highly recommend you take a look at Don't Make Me Think" by Steve Krug, one of the best (and most entertaining) books I've ever seen on the topic of sensible Web site design.
That's it for the moment, but I may have more suggestions later. Anyone else have any feedback?
What about images? Would
What about images? Would having thumbnails next to each article be helpful or would that be too much?
Makes sense
Definitely, I think adding appropriate thumbnails makes a lot of sense for your site.
